Aramits to Escot 11 miles
This morning's breakfast discussion about what makes people and
cultures the way they are was interesting and a real challenge for my
french. It also extended breakfast so I set off later than intended.
Still, today's walk was a fairly easy one and I had my bed sorted for
the night, so no matter. When I did leave the abbey bells were
valiantly trying to drown out the sound of the 2nd day of the Rally
Cross competition on my hills of yesterday. They lost the battle.
I wandered up and down, largely on farm tracks enjoying the
tranquility. I hardly saw a soul except a couple of chaps having a
chat over the garden fence as I passed through a tiny village. They
wanted to know if I was carrying a parachute (!) but offered me
refreshment when they heard what I was up to. I was a bit unnerved by
the older fellow staring intently at my chest until I remembered I had
my map case round my neck as usual. He was very interested in my route!
It was a really enjoyable day except for a nasty 2 mile stretch at the
end on a very wet main road. Only one mean car didn't make a
deliberate effort to avoid drenching me with spray. Apart from that it
was a very pleasant day. I'm now looking forward to a good dinner
provided by my English host. She and her husband are renovating this
old chateau which looks as though it could have at least 30 bedrooms.
They are 3 yrs into the project. They could still be working on it in
30 years time!
